The Augie Type-S combines the comfort of a slipper with the structure and durability of a dress shoe, now with a slightly softer counter and toe. Fully lined in calfskin with our signature padded footbed for all-day support.

Built for natural movement and all-day comfort. Our refined last follows your foot's natural curves with a generous toe box that looks proportional, never bulky. All styles come in a standard E width—carefully calibrated to accommodate a broad range of foot shapes while maintaining a close, supportive feel.

Mr. Marco's shoe factory has been making exceptional shoes in the Tuscan hills since 1948. Family owned and operated, now in the fourth generation, they have been making the Augie family of loafers for August Special since day one. Combining their wealth of experience, the most modern machinery, and highly skilled craftspeople, they supply some of the most discerning brands in the world.

Full grain vegetable-tanned calfskin from Tuscany. Fully lined in calf, with a memory foam footbed - the athletic foam midsole is wrapped in calfskin too. Proprietary outsole is made from a highly durable rubber compound.

August Special shoes are crafted with great care, and like any meaningful investment they call for just a little attention to maintenance. We offer a range of Saphir products specially curated to care for the August Special collection. Use cedar shoe trees after each wear to preserve shape and absorb moisture, allowing 24 hours between wears. Brush away dirt and grit daily on both leather and suede shoes and boots, paying attention to the welt area. For leather shoes, gently wipe the exteriors clean with a barely-damp lint-free cloth, and use conditioner sparingly—only when the leather appears dry. Apply cream polish occasionally for color restoration, reserving wax polish for when a higher shine is required. For suede shoes, gently use a suede brush to clean the surface, being careful not to over-brush as this can cause the nap to become shaggy. They can be sprayed with Saphir 'Super Invulner' to provide protection and waterproofing. Following this routine, your August Special shoes will develop a custom fit and should last decades with periodic resoling.

The Anatomy of the Type-S

This model has a hand-sewn vamp stitch, and is made up in a finely grained calf skin from the Tuscany. At less than a millimeter thick, this leather is soft and supple, and can be carefully brushed to maintain its rich finish, or left alone to develop a timeworn patina. The lightweight, foam midsole is neatly wrapped in a complimentary dark brown calf leather.

Our signature Augie loafers are all built on the Harry Last, which is a classic fit following the natural shape and curves of your feet. It has a carved inside waist to provide improved arch support and a refined silhouette. The toe box is roomy to allow natural movement and a comfortable stride, whilst the vamp is cut closer across the instep to ensure a secure fit and stability within the shoe.
