Frequently Asked Questions

How should August Special shoes fit?

An August Special shoe should hold your foot securely through the heel, instep, and waist, without pinching at the toes or causing discomfort when standing still. Some initial snugness is normal, particularly in structured calfskin and heavier leathers, but the shoe should never be uncomfortably tight. A little heel-lift is sometimes experienced in a new pair of loafers, this should rapidly diminish as the shoes form to your feet.

For boots, focus less on empty space in front of the toe and more on how securely the shoe holds your foot in place. Your heel should remain down on the footbed as you walk, with minimal movement from side to side or front to back.

Which models are made on which lasts?

All of our shoes are in US sizes, built on E-width lasts. We have a range of lasts, all made by the same lastmaker for sizing consistency across models and styles.

Our signature Augie loafers are all built on the Harry Last, which is a classic fit following the natural shape and curves of your feet. It has a carved inside waist for allow improved arch support and a refined silhouette. The toe box is roomy and allows for natural movement and a comfortable stride, whilst the vamp and instep are cut closer to the top of the foot to ensure a secure fit and stability within the shoe.

The Aviator and Belliver Boots are made on a variant of the Harry Last, with a slightly elevated toe-spring and a marginally higher instep to allow easy donning and removal. Toe shape and overall silhouette are the same as the classic Harry Last.

The Voyager Last is a refined take on a classic chukka or desert boot shape. It has an elegant silhouette, and a full, sculpted heel cup to keep the foot securely held in the shoe. The toe has a lowered toe-spring and the merest hint of being squared off that elevates it above more rudimentary boots. They feel snug and supportive on the foot.

Do all Augie loafers fit the same?

All Augie models are built on the same last and share the same underlying fit. Material changes the initial feel - calfskin is generally firmer and less elastic at first, while suede is softer and usually breaks in more quickly.

The Type-GS-Penny shares the Harry Last and toe profile used across the Type P, S, GP, and GS family.

I am between sizes. Which should I choose?

The best answer depends on the model, your instep, forefoot width, preferred socks, and how you like a shoe to fit. Use our Size Finder as a starting point, then consult the fit notes on the individual product page.

If you have a wide forefoot, high instep, narrow heel, or an unusual fit concern, contact us with the sizes and models you wear comfortably in other brands. We are happy to offer a more detailed recommendation.

What if my shoes feel loose?

A shoe that is comfortable but has slight heel movement may be improved with a tongue pad or insole adjustment. If your heel lifts substantially, or your foot slides inside the shoe as you walk, a smaller size is likely the better solution.

Contact us before wearing a pair outdoors if you are unsure. We can help assess the fit and recommend the right next step.

Are duties and taxes included?

Duties and taxes are calculated at checkout once the delivery destination is confirmed. Where they are collected at checkout, your order arrives without additional charges due on delivery.

International return and exchange costs can vary by country. Please review the applicable terms at checkout or contact us before ordering if you have a question about a particular destination.

Can I return or exchange my order?

Yes. Begin a return or exchange through our Returns Portal. If your first size is not right, we will work with you to find the correct fit, subject to the terms in our Returns Policy.

For international orders, return shipping must be arranged by the customer. Duties and taxes paid on an original international shipment may not be recoverable, so we strongly recommend using the Size Finder or contacting us before ordering.

Will my shoes stretch or break in?

Leather will relax and mold to your foot with wear, especially across the width and instep. It will not meaningfully grow in length, so do not rely on break-in to correct a shoe that feels too short.

If the shoes feel snug but not uncomfortable, wear them for short periods with a thinner sock. If it is uncomfortable while standing still, or there is persistent pressure in one area, it may need a different size or a width stretch.
