Maker Story

Owned and operated by three third-generation siblings, our Voyager chukka workshop was originally founded in 1930 by their grandfather in the countryside outside Vinci. Their focus on craftsmanship and quality is relentless, and their expertise across Goodyear, Blake, Bolognese, and Norwegian construction methods makes them an exceptional partner.

Material Specifications

1.2mm full grain calf suede from Opera in Tuscany. Unlined quarters and vamp, with a memory foam footbed wrapped in calfskin - the Blake construction allows for full recrafting. Vibram Gumlite outsole is made of an ultralight microcellular compound.

Care Guide

August Special shoes are crafted with great care, and like any meaningful investment they call for just a little attention to maintenance. We offer a range of Saphir products specially curated to care for the August Special collection. Use cedar shoe trees after each wear to preserve shape and absorb moisture, allowing 24 hours between wears. Brush away dirt and grit daily on both leather and suede shoes and boots, paying attention to the welt area. For leather shoes, gently wipe the exteriors clean with a barely-damp lint-free cloth, and use conditioner sparingly—only when the leather appears dry. Apply cream polish occasionally for color restoration, reserving wax polish for when a higher shine is required. For suede shoes, gently use a suede brush to clean the surface, being careful not to over-brush as this can cause the nap to become shaggy. They can be sprayed with Saphir 'Super Invulner' to provide protection and waterproofing. Following this routine, your August Special shoes will develop a custom fit and should last decades with periodic resoling.

The Anatomy of the Voyager

Elevating the form of an iconic desert boot, the Voyager is Blake-constructed with a one-piece counter and quarter panel for seamless, flexible comfort. The upper half of this panel is unlined for flexibility, whilst the lower half is lined in calf for enhanced stability. Forward of the tongue the vamp is also unlined for warm climate comfort and breathability.

The full-grain calf suede is supple and with enough elasticity to move naturally with your foot while maintaining its refined shape over time, supported by our signature padded footbed for all-day cushioning. Notice the subtly tapered heel and extra-fine stitching throughout.

The Vibram Gumlite outsole uses a soft, lightweight compound that's half the weight of conventional rubber without sacrificing durability. The tread features hundreds of small nubs for enhanced traction and cushioning, while the material itself provides excellent shock absorption and flexibility. Originally engineered for energy efficiency during uphill walking, it delivers reliable grip on flat and polished surfaces.

Brown suede shoes on a patterned rug

"The Voyager Last is a refined take on a historic desert boot shape. It has an elegant silhouette, slim and close to the foot, with a sculpted heel cup to hold the foot securely within the boot. The toe-spring and heel height have been lowered so the boot sits close to the ground, whilst the toe has the merest hint of squaring that elevates it above more rudimentary designs. The result feels snug and secure on the foot with gentle arch support."
