Introducing the Augie-GS-Penny - a new take on a true American icon. Combining a hand-stitched toe and Goodyear construction with a classic penny-strap. The welted leather outsole is attached with fine welt stitching, a hand-striped edge and a nailed heel. Note the elegant bevelled waist. Fully calf-lined, with a padded insole throughout.

Mr Marco's shoe factory has been making exceptional shoes in the Tuscan hills since 1948. Family owned and operated, now in the fourth generation, they have been making the Augie family of loafers for August Special since day one. Combining their wealth of experience, the most modern machinery, and highly skilled craftspeople, they supply some of the most discerning brands in the world.

Full grain calfskin from Conceria Carli in Tuscany. Fully lined in calf, with a memory foam footbed, the oak tanned leather outsole is attached with a Goodyear welt and is carefully burnished with a hand-painted edge stripe as a finishing touch.

August Special shoes are crafted with great care, and like any meaningful investment they call for just a little attention to maintenance. We offer a range of Saphir products specially curated to care for the August Special collection. Use cedar shoe trees after each wear to preserve shape and absorb moisture, allowing 24 hours between wears. Brush away dirt and grit daily on both leather and suede shoes and boots, paying attention to the welt area. For leather shoes, gently wipe the exteriors clean with a barely-damp lint-free cloth, and use conditioner sparingly—only when the leather appears dry. Apply cream polish occasionally for color restoration, reserving wax polish for when a higher shine is required. For suede shoes, gently use a suede brush to clean the surface, being careful not to over-brush as this can cause the nap to become shaggy. They can be sprayed with Saphir 'Super Invulner' to provide protection and waterproofing. Following this routine, your August Special shoes will develop a custom fit and should last decades with periodic resoling.

The Penny Loafer needs no explanation - it’s a classic American icon, and has been worn by men of style since the 1930’s. Our version is built from full grain Calfskins and finely napped Calf Suedes, leathers that pick up character with wear and reward the occasional conditioning with handsome patina.

Underneath, the same standard as all Augies. Goodyear welted leather outsole, carefully assembled with fine welt stitching, solid enough to provide many years of wear - and re-craftable pretty much indefinitely. The fully calf-lined interior and padded footbed provides immediate comfort, and will continue to mold to your feet with wear. Built on the Harry Last with the same shape and toe profile as Types P, S, GP and GS - the Type-GS-Penny is the newest loafer in the collection.
